Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton believes that the Reds have to be patient with striker Andy Carroll if they want him to turn into a world-class performer,
Carroll was signed for £35m from Newcastle United last January, but has failed to show performances worthy of his fee. The Reds striker has been accused of being a heavy drinker over the summer break and has lost his regular place in the Liverpool side. Houghton believes that the club have to give Carroll a lot of time so that he can repay their faith. Houghton said: 'Andy has just got to be patient, and we have got to be patient. It seems like we get a player in for £35m and he should be brilliant every game – why? – Because he cost £35m. The fact that he is 22-years-old doesn’t matter to the public, we just go "we don’t care what your age is, because you’re £35m you should be the finished article".
'He's not. He’s still learning his trade and he is at a good place to learn it. I think we’re far too quick to judge players, especially at that age. I would give him a little bit longer than most players', the former Ireland international, who played under Dalglish, added.
