Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has said his team outclassed opponents Aston Villa on Sunday.
The former Villa man was on fine form as Kenny Dalglish’s side ran out 2-0 winners.
The Anfield outfit were far superior throughout, which Downing relished after receiving a hostile reception of his first return to Villa Park since his summer transfer.
“It was a pleasing victory for us,” Said Downing to the club’s official website.
“I thought we started the game very well and thought we could have got a few more goals to be honest, but the most important thing is the win.
"I expected some stick but there are no problems and today is all about the team winning.
The England international felt that Liverpool’s superiority on the day was vindication as to why he made the move to Anfield.
Downing also thought it was a performance that proved the current Liverpool side has the talent to challenge for honours.
"We were by far the better team and I think it proved a point why I wanted to come to Liverpool,” he added.
“We've got a top team and you only have to look at the bench to see the lads who can't get a game.
“It just shows how strong we are and it was the right move for me at the right time.”
The 27-year-old also maintained he has no regrets about leaving the midlands club and that transfers are just part of football.
Downing made the switch to Liverpool in a deal thought to be worth around £18million.
“I enjoyed my time at Villa. They are a great club, they are great people but you move on in football, that's the way it goes,” he concluded.
