Liverpool eye Porto midfielder Fernando to replace crocked Lucas

Kenny Dalglish is reportedly lining up a move for Porto's Fernando Reges, to plug the midfield gap left by the recent season-ending injury to Lucas Leiva.

The Liverpool boss may have to shell out around £17 million for the combative Brazilian, who is also thought to be on the list of transfer targets of his former manager, Chelsea's Andre Villas Boas.

According to the Daily Mail, Dalglish sent his scouts to watch the 24-year-old this week during Porto's goalless draw with Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League.

Fernando is thought to be one of a number of players on Liverpool's wish-list for the upcoming transfer window, which may also include another striker, centre back and right winger.

The Anfield club are desperate to bring in a new midfield enforcer after star performer Lucas damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in last week's Carling Cup win at Chelsea, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

He underwent surgery in Sao Paulo yesterday and 'will now begin an agreed rehabilitation programme which will be overseen by the club's medical team,' the Reds confirmed.

In Lucas's absence last weekend, Liverpool fell to a 1-0 defeat at Fulham, in which his sharp tackling and accurate passing were sorely missed.
